Don’t Out-Source Your Happiness by Randy Gage

You know what the real problem is with trying to keep others happy?  They define happiness on their own terms. And their perspective is screwed up by the limiting mind viruses they bought into from society.

The only kind of happiness that many people value is the kind they’re comfortable with.  And you know what kind of happiness those people are comfortable with?

The kind that doesn’t expose how unfulfilling their own lives are.

If your idea of happiness is keeping your head below the cubicle, surviving hump day, making it to Friday to buy a 12-pack of rancid fermented hops and spending the weekend binge-watching Netflix – they are very happy to see you happy.

But if your idea of happiness is:

  • Becoming a sculptor
  • Taking a leap year off before college
  • Moving to Nashville to work toward a record deal
  • Quitting your corporate job to start a vinyl record store
  • Floating your IPO to become a tech bro billionaire…

Society will do its damnedest to talk you out of your dream.

When they try to explain why you’re too young, inexperienced, or unrealistic, smile sweetly and tell them to fuck off.  (In a loving way, of course.)

Every person seeking abundant happiness will be confronted with an army of people determined to maintain the façade of conformity happiness.  These people believe they’re protecting you from yourself.  The truth is that they’re protecting themselves from being confronted by the truth that they have settled for a life of mediocrity. And mediocrity is a crime against humanity.

Please. Stop trying to make other people happy. Pursue your own happiness and don’t let anyone talk you out of it.

Peace,

– RG
